Challenging Beliefs, Memoirs of a Career -  By Tim Noakes

Reviewed by Edward Chapman

This book could have been subtitled Tim has a bit of a whinge. He has a big moan about the sports drinks industry, the food industry, Dr Christian Barnard and the South African Rugby authorities to name a few. It is an interesting book, with his opinions backed up by extensive science.

Although it starts with the Comrades Marathon it is not all about running; both rugby and cricket feature extensively as does general sports science. The section on the 'central governor' is very interesting as are his views on a low-carb diet. This cannot be explained in sound bites as it is easy for people to misunderstand what he is saying so, if you are interested, get hold of a copy of his book or read his research papers.
